Growing up surrounded by medical professionals, Dr. Gary R. Skankey, M.D., knew he wanted to follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and become a third-generation doctor. He decided to embark on a career in Infectious Disease Medicine to help people with long-term diseases get the correct treatment needed.

Embarking on his education in medicine, in 1982 Dr. Skankey attended the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. After graduating with a medical degree in 1986, he then went on to complete an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Following this, Dr Skankey gained a fellowship in Infectious Disease at the Irvine Medical Center, University of California.

Dr. Skankey began working as an Associate of Infectious Disease Specialists in 1992 and proudly upheld this role for 25 years. In 2017, he made the decision to open his own private practice in Las Vegas where he treats patients with long-term or lifelong diseases to this day. Specializing in infections that are often tricky to diagnose, Dr. Skankey is responsible for examining his patients and finding the best course of action, using many different antimicrobial treatments which help with infections. He is passionate about building a good rapport with his patients and is known to tell jokes to make them smile and lift their spirits.

Aside from his day-to-day clinical role, for the last 20 years, Dr. Skankey has taught at the University of Nevada School of Medicine as an Associate Clinical Professor. He is proud to teach the next generation of students that ‘Medicine is a calling, a mission, to heal and to serve’.

Having more than 35 years of experience within the medical field, Dr. Skankey is board-certified in infectious disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and is licensed to practice in the state of Nevada. The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, which upholds the high standards of Internal Medicine healthcare in an ever-changing world.

Dr. Skankey is also a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA) and the American College of Physicians (FACP). Additionally, as a testament to his excellence in medicine, he has recently been recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Trusted Infectious Disease Specialist.
